Act I Scene I

University of Toronto Faculty: Kathleen Gallagher

I am Kathleen Gallagher, and I’m a professor at OISE. I do research from there and I teach in the teacher education program, and I also teach in the graduate program.

I found that some of the security and surveillance policies in a post-9/11 world have had an incredible impact on how young people feel somewhat criminalized in those contexts, how they see each other, how issues of race and class and gender play out. I do research that I want to have impact so that it affects the lives of the research participants who have shared their and bared their souls.

The University of Toronto has recognized the teaching expertise that exists in the building at OISE. We have faculty and instructors who are master teachers. It’s an amazing experience to know that you can actually model the kinds of interactions, relationships, communications, that you hope a new generation of teachers will  introduce into schools.
