Title: English

Grade 9 applied English. Students prepare a visual/written characterization of themselves based on exemplar from current novel study, and present to class.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of, and respect for, the wide variety of cultures and languages in Canada.
Specific: Students will restate important information using visual representation.

Students will brainstorm in pairs (same language if necessary). They may complete written assisgnment as a dual-language assignment and receive bilingual support if necessary. When pair/share complete, students will work in groups of four to practice before presenting to class.

Instructions presented in chart and written form, and the classroom model may be used as an exemplar. Previous reviews include mini-grammar lesson using verb tenses, adjectives, adverbs to describe characters in the novel.

Observation: how students work in pairs/groups; practicing presentations. Evaluation focuses on content, rather than language.
Evaluation is more holistic.

Rubric utilizing curriculum guidelines, modified for ESL learners: adjust weighting on presentation - more given to visual, non-verbal communication strategies. Reduced language requriements; students can use visuals to demonstrate knowledge. Students have option of producing assignment in first language.

Exemplar on board, criteria chart on board. Vocabulary notebook, magazines, markers to complete representaiton of their character on chart paper.
