Professor Janette Pelletier collaborates on newly released In Brief report from Aga Khan Foundation Canada on Linking home and school for improved literacy in Pakistan. Research was led by Janette’s former PhD student, Almina Pardhan, who worked in Karachi and Gilgit- Baltistan, Pakistan field-testing the Family Literacy in Action curriculum.

New Research! Congratulations to professors Patricia Ganea and Rhonda Martinussen for successful research applications. Patricia has received funding for a 5-year study on The influence of fantastical discourse context on young children’s on-line sentence comprehension. Rhonda received 5 years of funding from SSHRC for Early inattention behaviours, executive functions, and student engagement.

Congratulations to our Lab School!
The International Association of Laboratory Schools (IALS) has named the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study (JICS) winner of the 2016 Outstanding Laboratory School Award.
Principal Richard Messina will accept the award in Puerto Rico today at the International Association of Laboratory Schools annual conference.
“The JICS school community is very excited about this award. It recognizes the hard work and creativity of our teachers, the involvement of our parents, and the guidance we receive from our scholars,” noted Messina.

We are delighted to welcome Clare Kosnik, newly appointed Director of the Institute for the term November 1, 2015 to June 30, 2018. “Professor Kosnik brings considerable experience in academic leadership to this important role. She was Director of the Elementary Preservice Program from 2000 to 2003, Head of the Centre for Teacher Development from 2007 to 2009, and Director of the Master of Teaching Program in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning from 2009 to 2011. She is internationally recognized for her contributions to scholarship on teacher education, action research and teacher inquiry, and literacy education. She has an impressive record of research funding, including support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Carnegie Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the Ontario Ministry of Education. She will be cross-appointed to the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development during her term as Director.” (From the appointment announcement by OISE’s Interim Dean, Glen A. Jones).
