Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
General Requirements
- An appropriate Bachelor's degree (typically a four-year Honours degree in North America or a three-year Bologna compliant degree) with high academic standing (equivalent to at least mid-B or better in final year) from a recognized university. Please refer to the OISE/UT 2019-2020 Graduate Bulletin and the Graduate Admission website for further information.
- You will ideally have experience working with groups of learners, preferably at the age level you wish to teach.
- Applicants from outside Canada, whose primary language is not English, must demonstrate English proficiency to acceptable standards through an acceptable language proficiency test. Please see the English Language Proficiency guidelines for more details.
Additional Requirements by Concentration
Primary-Junior Option: Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6
There are no additional admission requirements for this option.
Junior-Intermediate Option: Grade 4 - Grade 10
In addition to the general requirements, applicants for Junior-Intermediate concentration must also identify one subject that will be their area of teaching specialization, known as your "teachable" or "teaching subject". Teachables include Dramatic Arts, English, French, Geography, Health & Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Music (Instrumental or Vocal), Science, or Visual Arts. You must have the appropriate undergraduate prerequisites for your chosen teachable. Please check to make sure you have your chosen teachables prerequisites.You should only apply to the Junior-Intermediate Option if you are confident you have the required prerequisites for one of the teachables. If you do not have the necessary prerequisites, please consider the Primary-Junior Option as an alternative.
Intermediate-Senior Option: Grade 7 - Grade 12
In addition to the general requirements, applicants for Intermediate-Senior concentration must also identify two subjects that will be their areas of teaching specialization, known as your "teachable" or "teaching subject". Teachables include Business Studies (General or Accounting), Dramatic Arts, English, French, Geography, Religious Education in Catholic Schools, Health & Physical Education, History, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science General, Social Science, Music (Instrumental or Vocal) or Visual Arts. You must have the appropriate undergraduate prerequisites for your two teachables. Please check to make sure you have your two chosen teachable prerequisites. You should only apply to the Intermediate-Senior Option if you are confident you have the required prerequisites for your two chosen teachables. If you do not have the necessary prerequisites, please consider the Junior-Intermediate Option as an alternative.
