Paul Kay’s involvement in the partnership between OISE and Northlea Elementary and Middle School has taught him to value the "energy and the influx of new ideas" that OISE teacher candidates bring into his classroom, and the opportunities it affords him for reflection on his own teaching. "During the mentoring process I find myself reflecting on my teaching practice and program more critically. This often provides new insight into changes I would like to see in my own practice."

As an associate teacher over the past six years, Paul has had the opportunity to observe OISE teacher candidates integrate their learning with their practice and develop into confident "members of the school community" who "have an impact on the classes they work in and the students they work with."

Paul finds one benefit of participating in the OISE partnership is "when second year (M.A.) students come back to Northlea and choose to spend both practicum blocks here. They then get a deeper understanding of what it is like to teach in a school."

Paul Kay is a Teacher/Librarian, Library Family of Schools Facilitator, Information Communication Technology and Teacher Mentoring Chairperson at Northlea Elementary and Middle School in the TDSB. He has been working in education for 20 years.
