Student Employment

OISE offers students four types of employment opportunities that provide financial assistance and experience in the research and teaching fields.

Job postings can be viewed by current students using your
UTORid. Students are required to have a university-issued email account on their ACORN profile. 
 

Graduate Assistantship (GA)

Graduate Assistantships (GA's) are opportunities for students engaged in research and/or field development projects that contribute to their academic and professional development. GAs are unionized positions represented by CUPE 3902, Unit 7. As a member of CUPE3902, Unit 7, you will have access to benefits, including a Top-up Health and Dental Plan.

Online support resources are available on the OISE Education Commons website and can be discussed with your supervisor.     

Note: Students holding a Fall/Winter GA, while also receiving a Graduate Funding Package will hold their GA as part of their funding. 

Eligibility

  • Appointments are conditional upon a student being legally authorized to work in Canada by virtue of having a Social Insurance Number and Canadian issued study permit by the commencement date of your appointment or, at the latest, within 14 days following the commencement date of your appointment.  Students will need a Canadian bank account in order to receive remuneration.
  • Should you not have the above noted requisite legal authorization in order to permit you to be legally authorized to work in Canada by the commencement date, the Offer Letter will be automatically deemed null and void and of no further effect, without any further obligations to you.
  • To hold a Graduate Assistantship, you must be registered as a full-time student at OISE.
  • Flextime PhD students are eligible to be considered for a GA or R&D GA once during the first 5 years of their program and must be pursuing full-time studies as per the CUPE 3902, Unit 7 Collective Agreement.
  • For Fall/Winter, Fall, and Winter contracts, students who are full-time employees at the University of Toronto or elsewhere, are ineligible to be considered for graduate assistantships under the CUPE3902 Unit 7 Collective Agreement. Full-time employment is defined as 35 hours per week, or where different, the number of hours specified in an employee's contract as full time employment.
  • Full time graduate students are eligible to be considered for Graduate Assistantships under this Collective Agreement. Graduate students holding a combination of scholarships fellowships, OISE-arranged teaching assistantships, OISE-arranged course instructorships, and/or research assistantships greater than or equal to the value of a full graduate assistantship ($13,382.84 in 2023-2024) during the academic year (September-August), are not eligible for a graduate assistantship. 
  • For definitions of "Group A" and "Group B," refer to the CUPE 3902, Unit 7 Collective Agreement.  A summary of the definition is as follows:

Group A

  • MA (funded) students in the first year of the program
  • MA-SCCP (funded) students in the first 2 years of the program
  •  PhD (funded) students in the first 4 years of the program
  • SCCP students at OISE who then go on to pursue the PhD at OISE in the first three (3) years of the PhD (funded) program.

Group B

  • MA students in the second year of the program
  • MA-SCCP students in the third year of the program
  • MEd, MT, MA-CSE students in the first 2 years of the program
  • PhD students in the 5th year of the program
  • PhD SCCP students who are not covered by Group A up to the 5th year of the program
  • Flex-time PhD students are eligible once during the first 5 years of the program
  • EdD students in the first 5 years of the program

Dates

Fall/Winter 2023-2024

  • May 10th 2023 - June 4, 2023 - Fall / Winter positions posted and available to students in Group A. 

  • July: OISE matches Group A students to Fall/Winter positions.

  • Mid July (Date TBA): GA positions posted and available to students in Group B 
  • August: OISE matches Group B students to Fall/Winter positions. Only successful applicants will be notified.

Summer 2023 

  • March 6: Summer positions will be posted in March 2023 and available to students in Group A and B. 
  • March 21st: Summer Application deadline at 11:59 pm. 
  • March 21st to Early April: Notification to succesful applicants.

Teaching Assistantship (TA)

Teaching Assistantships (TAs) are supervised and mentored by an OISE faculty member. TAs are given opportunities to assist in teaching and course activities, including; lecturing, facilitate class discussions, organizing group work. TAs may also gain experience in student evaluation and supervision of students in the field. TAs are unionized positions represented by CUPE 3902, Unit 1. As a CUPE3902, Unit 1 member, you will have access to benefits, including a Top-up Health and Dental Plan.

Note: Students holding a Fall/Winter TA, while also receiving a Base Funding Package will hold their TA as part of their funding.

Eligibility for OISE TA positions

  • To hold a Teaching Assistantship, you must be registered as a student at the University of Toronto/OISE.
  • Typically positions at OISE require at least a Master's degree as one of the minimum qualifications. Please refer to individual job postings for more information.

  • To apply, you must submit, 1) one-page CV or resumé; and 2) one-page statement outlining what you will bring to the position and how the position will enhance your studies.
  • Names of referees may also be included but not required.

Research and Development Graduate Assistantship (R&D GA)

Research and Development Graduate Assistantships (R&D GAs) are placements for students engaged in research and/or field development projects contributing to their academic and professional development.

R&D GAs are unionized positions represented by CUPE 3902, Unit 7

Eligibility

  • To hold an R&D GA, you must be registered as a full-time student at OISE.
  • Masters students (including MA, MEd, MT, and MA-CSE) students are eligible to hold a R&D GA in the first 2 years of their program.
  • MA-SCCP students are eligible to hold an R&D GA in the first 3 years of their program.
  • Full-time doctoral (PhD, EdD) students are eligible to hold an R&D GA in the first 6 years of their program.
  • Flex-time PhD students are eligible to be considered for a GA or R&D GA once during the first 5 years of their program and must be pursuing full-time studies as per the CUPE 3902, Unit 7 Collective Agreement.
  • You are not eligible for an R&D GA if you are holding a combination of scholarships, fellowships, OISE-arranged teaching assistantships, OISE-arranged course instructorships and/or research assistantships greater than or equal to the value of a full R&D GA during the academic year (September-August)
  • You may not hold a Graduate Assistantship (GA) and an R&D Graduate Assistantship (R&D GA) at the same time

Course Instructor (CI)

Course Instructors (CIs) are graduate students or post-doctoral fellows hired to teach and lead course activities. CIs are responsible for preparing course material, lecturing, as well as supervising and evaluating student performance.

Note: Students holding a Fall/Winter CI, while also receiving a Base Funding Package will hold their CI as part of their funding.

CIs are unionized positions represented by CUPE 3902, Unit 1


Eligibility

  • Positions posted here are open to graduate students in the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Fellows at OISE/University of Toronto. Additional requirements are listed on postings.
