For the second consecutive year, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto has been ranked No. 1 in Canada by the QS World University Subject Rankings.
OISE also placed third out of all publicly funded universities in North America, and fifth overall in North America. Ranked 11th worldwide, OISE was the only Canadian institution in the top 15 spots. The University of British Columbia took the next highest spot at 18, followed by McGill at 36.
Published annually since 2011, the QS World University Rankings by Subject covers a total of 48 disciplines, highlighting the world’s top performing universities in each academic area. The rankings are based on academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations, and impact of published work.
OISE’s ranking as No. 1 in the country did not come as a surprise to Dean Glen Jones.
“They’re taking a look at our research activities, they’re comparing us with other institutions and they’re discovering that we are strong in terms of both our research and our international reputation,” he said.
To generate this year’s results, QS ranked 1,130 institutions and analyzed over 22 million papers that have produced close to 200 million citations.
