OISE promotes six faculty members

Six OISE faculty members have recently received approval for promotion. Congratulations to Bonnie Burstow, Mark Evans, Michal Perlman, James Slotta, Rinaldo Walcott, and Leesa Wheelahan on this richly deserved achievement. 

Read below to learn about the contributions and impact of each of these scholars. 


''Professor Bonnie Burstow of the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education has been promoted to the rank of Professor, Teaching Stream, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Burstow is a world renowned anti-psychiatry researcher and activist, whose ethically engaged scholarship has enhanced her excellence as a graduate and public educator. The influence of her scholarship has been felt in fields as diverse as adult education, mad studies, community development, women’s studies and disability studies. Her superlative teaching skills have been recognized by OISE’s David E. Hunt Award for Excellence in Graduate Education.
 


''Professor Mark Evans of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning has been promoted to the rank of Professor, Teaching Stream, effective January 1, 2018. Professor Evans has an established record of excellence in teaching, supervision, and educational leadership, in addition to a body of internationally respected scholarship in global citizenship education and teacher education. His integration of research and pedagogy has also informed an impressive body of work on policy and program development in Canada and abroad.


''Professor Michal Perlman of the Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development has been promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Perlman is a productive scholar known for her integration of theoretical and applied research on environmental influences on the social development of young children. Her empirical studies on child care and her research on early child development have had a significant impact both in her discipline and on public policy.


''Professor James Slotta of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning has been promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Slotta is an international leader in the field of educational technology, widely renowned for his innovative, practice-situated research on knowledge integration and knowledge communities. He is a past Canada Research Chair in Education and Technology, and is currently finishing a term as Associate Dean for Research at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education while on leave from OISE.


''Professor Rinaldo Walcott of the Department of Social Justice Education has been promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Walcott is an innovative and internationally influential interdisciplinary scholar in the areas of Black studies, cultural studies, gender theory, transnational and diaspora studies, and Black queer studies. As both a pioneering researcher and a public intellectual with an outstanding record of advocacy, Professor Walcott has redefined common understandings of Black studies and anti-Black racism in Canada and abroad. He is currently the Director of the Women & Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto.


''Professor Leesa Wheelahan of the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education has been promoted to the rank of Professor, effective July 1, 2018. Professor Wheelahan is a widely cited scholar with an international reputation for outstanding work on the contributions made by postsecondary education to social justice, and on pathways between and within educational sectors and the labour market. She is the William G. Davis Chair in Community College Leadership, a testament to her stature as a researcher.
