In her breathtaking memoir, Njoki Wane shares her journey from her parents' small coffee farm in Kenya, where she helped her mother in the fields as a child, to her current role as a celebrated professor, Black feminist and anti-racist scholar at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

In this episode, Jeff speaks to Dr. Wane about her work and the childhood lessons that would later help her to succeed as a woman of colour in the academy—and become a mentor to many.

Professor Njoki Wane is a recognized scholar in the areas of Black feminisms in Canada  Africa, African indigenous knowledges, anti-colonial and decolonizing education and African women and spirituality.

She is a prolific writer with an impressive record of scholarship and a glance at Dr. Wane’s resume shows a productive educator and scholar. She has 14 books, 33 chapters and 24 articles in refereed journals, and presented at over 300 conferences both locally and internationally. 


Jeff Myers is a proud OISE graduate and former president of the OISE Graduate Students Association and the OISE Alumni Association. Today, Jeff serves as the Director of Enrolment and Academic Strategy with a world-renowned international education organization.

His graduate research at OISE focused on second language education and citizenship learning. Driven by the ideals and challenges of international education, Jeff has written and spoken about this topic in various publications and conferences worldwide.
