Hailing from Bangladesh, Arif Anwar (PhD, ’14) teaches creative writing at the University of Toronto's School of Continuing Studies. He’s also a novelist, whose debut novel, “The Storm,” landed him on CBC’s 2018 annual writers to watch list.

The Storm is an epic saga that weaves together five love stories that chronicle sixty years of Bangladeshi history.

In this episode, Jeff speaks to Arif about his work—and how he uses storytelling to highlight critical global economic and social issues and their effects on people.

Arif Anwar was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh, just miles from the Bay of Bengal. He previously worked for BRAC, one of the world's largest nongovernmental organizations, on issues of poverty alleviation, and for UNICEF Myanmar on public health issues. Arif holds a PhD in education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. 
 


 

Jeff Myers is a proud OISE graduate and former president of the OISE Graduate Students Association and the OISE Alumni Association. Today, Jeff serves as the Director of Enrolment and Academic Strategy with a world-renowned international education organization.

His graduate research at OISE focused on second language education and citizenship learning. Driven by the ideals and challenges of international education, Jeff has written and spoken about this topic in various publications and conferences worldwide.
