Dr. Ann Lopez elected President-Elect of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME)

Ann LopezOn May 31, 2016, the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) announced that OISE's Dr. Ann Lopez has been elected President-Elect of the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).

NAME is a non-profit organization that advances and advocates for equity and social justice through multicultural education. 

This position has been held by internationally respected scholars such as Christine Sleeter, Carl Grant and Kevin Kumashiro.

Dr. Lopez will actively further the mission of NAME, multicultural education and social justice based on her body of work and commitment over the last twenty years. 

In these challenging times Ann sees this role as an opportunity to continue the work NAME has done over the last twenty five years as a critical voice for educational and societal change in the United States and globally. Ann works collaboratively with activists, scholars, researchers, practitioners and students to create change. 

Dr. Lopez has been a Board member of NAME for the last three years and made valuable contributions in that role. Ann's journey as social justice advocate began in Jamaica years ago. A former secondary classroom teacher and school administrator in Canada, Ann has been a consistent champion for equity.  Ann's social justice work as scholar and practitioner has had impact on students. At OISE, Ann facilitated an outreach program that encouraged students from marginalized groups, to think about becoming teachers. She collaborated with teachers and administrators to implement culturally responsive practices in a low SES school in the TDSB. She has also collaborated to diversify the teacher candidate pool to better represent diversity in the Greater Toronto Area.

  • Dr. Ann E. Lopez is a faculty member in the Department of Leadership Higher and Adult Education at OISE, University of Toronto

  • Current NAME Region 8 Director and first international Regional Director

  • NAME Outreach & Communication Committee Co-Chair

  • NAME Conference National Coordination Team

  • Teaching and research focus on equity, diversity and social justice and in teacher education and educational leadership. 

  • Social justice advocate and K-20 multicultural educator  for 20+ years

  • Academic Director Initial Teacher Education OISE/UT 2013-2015

  • Inclusive Schools Project OISE/TDSB embedding CRP

  • Presented research at conferences in Africa, The Caribbean, US, Canada & South Korea and has published widely.

  • 2015  G. Pritchy Smith Multicultural Education Educator of the Year
