School leadership in a changing world

44 school principals from Jiangsu, China complete Continuing Education's advanced leadership program

March 22, 2011

by: Janice Spencer

From March 3-18, 44 senior school principals from Jiangsu, China visited OISE's Continuing Education unit to complete an Advanced Leadership Program - School Leadership in a Changing World.

The program was hosted in partnership with SuOn College, founded by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education (JPDE) as an overseas education resource in North America. The name “SuOn” is an integration of two provincial names -- “Su” representing “Jiangsu” province in China and “On” for “Ontario” in Canada. Through the establishment of SuOn College, the JPDE facilitates education cooperation between the two provinces, Jiangsu and Ontario.

Throughout the two week program the group visited various schools, including a visit to the Ministry of Education, and heard from various leaders in the Ontario education system with sessions on:

  • Essential Aspects of Leadership for the 21st Century
  • Leading School Communities Effectively for Teaching Excellence
  • Debriefing the Experience at Schools - Principals Round Table
  • Mentoring and Coaching Teachers
  • Recruiting and Applying to Ontario Universities
  • New Teaching Approaches: How Do We Assess Students for the 21st Century?
  • Working in School Learning Communities: The Role of the School Principal
  • Teacher Professional Learning: Who What When?

The program was developed by Barbara Bodkin, Director of Continuing Education (OISE), Dr. Julia Pan, Senior Coordinator of International Initiatives (OISE) and Dr. Xiaobo Yang, Vice-President (SuOn College).

Dean Julia O'Sullivan congratulated all 44 participants for their participation, hard work and completion of the program and bestowed them with certificates on the final day of the program.
