Joan Moss receives OISE Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching

2012 Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching recipient Joan MossProfessor Joan Moss is the recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching.

An associate professor the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study in the Department of Human Development and Applied Psychology, Professor Moss teaches in two MA programs: Child Study & Education, and Developmental Psychology & Education at the Institute. Her research interests include mathematics education, teacher and student development in mathematics and mathematical reasoning.

Professor Moss is an inspirational educator, a mentor, and a renowned researcher who demonstrates the kind of leadership that empowers and transforms the lives of students and teachers. Professor Moss has been instrumental in the development of a wide variety of innovative teaching praxes and research designs that have positively impacted the field of educational research and the practice of teaching. Her unique inquiry stance makes her classroom never short of critical thinking, constructive reflection, and a deep sense of commitment to transformative learning.

Students, teachers, and faculty who have had working relations with Professor Moss have nothing but profound respect and admiration for her. Writing in support of her nomination, a colleague said, “Professor Moss is a remarkable and committed mentor at all levels, supporting researchers and graduate students with unparalleled generosity as she unstintingly provides time, attention, ideas, and seemingly endless emotional (and sometimes nutritional) sustenance.”

The Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching recognizes instructors for teaching excellence and specific contributions to teaching and learning at OISE, including special initiatives or projects in areas such as course design, research on teaching, or development of innovative methods.
