External Awards for Teacher Education Students

Below is a list of external awards that are available to students in OISE's teacher education programs through organizations and associations outside of OISE and U of T. 

 


Black Business and Professional Association (BBPA) National Scholarship Fund

The BBPA National Scholarship Fund is a national scholarship program and dedicated to supporting and promoting the achievement of academic excellence by Black Canadian youth through an annual scholarship program. The Fund receives financial donations from corporations and individuals that share its mission.

The application form does not ask you to target your candidacy to a specific scholarship. Judges will assess your application against scholarships with donor determined criteria. You will be considered for all scholarships for which your candidacy makes you eligible.


Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario's (ETFO) Scholarships & Awards

ETFO offers financial support to members and others for: doctoral and master’s scholarships and bursaries for men and women; bursaries for members of designated groups and Aboriginal education; and bursaries for sons and daughters of ETFO members. Awards applicable to teacher education students include:

ETFO Bursaries For Sons and Daughters of Members ($500)
Bursaries are offered annually to a son or daughter of an active member entering a faculty of education at a publicly funded university/institution. Up to twelve bursaries and a certificate of recognition may be granted.

ETFO Faculty of Education Awards ($500)
ETFO offers the Faculty of Education Award to a student at a faculty or school of education. The award
recognizes students in their final year of teacher training at a publically funded university/institution in Ontario.  ETFO awards up to 17 awards with accompanying certificates of recognition.

  • Some ETFO awards require a nomination. The deadline for awards nominations is February 1st of each year and award categories are posted by October of each year
  • Otherwise, the deadline for applications is typically April 30th of each year

Mico Alumni Association (Toronto Chapter) Scholarship Awards

The Scholarship Awards Program was established in 2003, to support student teachers in Ontario who have an interest in teaching urban schools that either have a high concentration of students who are of Jamaican ancestry, or have a high concentration for black students.

Ontario College of Teachers' Scholarship Program

The Ontario College of Teachers Scholarship Program awards scholarships that provide financial support to teacher candidates. The program identifies exemplary role models and pays direct financial assistance to those with a passion for and dedication to the highest ideals of teaching.

The Ontario College of Teachers Scholarship Program offers three awards:

Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship For Excellence In Teacher Education ($2,000)
This scholarship is named in honour of the College’s second registrar. Candidates must achieve outstanding academic achievement while demonstrating a high level of preparedness for teacher education.

Ontario College of Teachers Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate Scholarship ($2,000)
This scholarship is awarded to an Ontario teacher candidate in the Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate division. Applications are assessed on a recipient’s ability to demonstrate a high level of preparedness for teacher education through examples of community involvement, background and life experiences.

Ontario College of Teachers Intermediate/Senior Scholarship ($2,000)
This scholarship is awarded to an Ontario teacher candidate in the Intermediate/Senior division.  Applications are assessed on a recipient’s ability to demonstrate a high level of preparedness for teacher education through examples of community involvement, background and life experiences.

OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award: The H.W. Bryan Memorial Award of Honour ($1,000)

This award is granted to one graduating Intermediate/Senior or Technological Education Teacher Candidate at each English–language publicly-assisted Ontario faculty of education.

Phi Delta Kappa 

Through its Foundation program the Toronto Chapter PDK sponsors awards in faculties of education. These include:

Jackman Award  ($500)
This Award was established by the Toronto Chapter to honour its founding president Henry Jackman, who modelled lifelong dedication to education and a deep concern for the individual student. It is open to students of education at all levels, including graduate students of education, enrolled in an Ontario educational institution. The winning entry at the chapter level will receive $500 and a one-year membership in PDK. 

Susan Seidman Excellence in Student Teaching Award ($500/$1,000)
This award is open to students in an undergraduate education programme with a student teaching component. Undergraduate education majors engaged in student teaching during the summer, fall and spring of the current year are eligible.

The winning essay at the Chapter level will be entered in PDK International's Prospective Educator Award process. Chapter winners will receive a cheque for $500 and a Professional membership in PDK. The Chapter winner will be sent to the International level where it will be eligible for an award of up to USD $1000.



The Retired Teachers of Ontario Sholarship Program  ($1,000)

Each year the RTO/ERO awards up to 25 individual scholarships to assist the relative of a member who is enrolled in the final year of either an approved program that will directly lead to a career in teaching in Canada or who are in a Canadian publically-funded or not-for-profit college/university.
