Summary:
Chile has invested a great deal in school leadership over the past decade. There are leadership frameworks to shape principal assessment and national leadership centres focused on research about and professional development for school leaders. The primary emphasis of all of these initiatives has been the school principal, neglecting the role that other actors within the school play in the improvement process. This study takes up the notion of distributed pedagogical leadership in high schools by examining the roles that department chairs play--and don't play--in school level leadership for academic improvement.

Location of research:
Various high schools across Chile
