Erminia Pedretti

Ph.D., OISE, University of Toronto

Website: http://homespace.oise.utoronto.ca/~pedretti/index.html

Dr. Pedretti teaches in both pre-service teacher education and graduate programs. Her graduate courses include “Teaching and Learning about Science and Technology beyond Schools,” and “Teaching and Learning about Science: Issues and Strategies in Science, Technology and Society and Environment (STSE).” A new course, to be offered in the fall of 2009, explores STSE education, with a focus on stewardship, environmental and outdoor education. Her research interests include: STSE education, environmental and outdoor education, action research, teacher professional development and learning science in non-school settings.

Dr. Pedretti’s most recent SSHRC (2007-2011) entitled: Promoting Teaching for Scientific Literacy through University-School District Collaboration, explores science, technology, society and environment (STSE) education with a focus on environmental education, stewardship and outdoor education. Phase 1 of the project involved developing an on-line survey to determine Ontario teachers’ views and practices about environmental and outdoor education. Please visit: http://oiseee.blogspot.com/ if you are interested in completing the survey. In Phase 2, an action research group has been established in partnership with the Toronto District School Board, consisting of 19 elementary teachers with an interest in science education, and 5 outdoor education staff. The research project aims to explore both the theory and practice of STSE education, environmental and outdoor education. In addition to her own research, Dr. Pedretti continues to work with Professors Bencze, Hewitt and Wallace on case methods research in teacher education. Finally. Dr. Pedretti is leading the OISE team (consisting of Professors John Wallace, Hilary Inwood and David Montemurro) as part of an international alliance: Climate Change and Sustainable Development: The Response fro Education – A joint Research Project among Leading Education Institutes.
