Biography
Rosalia is a PhD Candidate and an Ontario-certified teacher whose research focuses on supporting multilingual students in mathematics through multimodal, multilingual digital platforms. She has teaching experience both internationally and in Toronto, and has contributed to projects on STEM education for newcomer youth, financial literacy in informal learning environments, and home literacy environments.
This project brings together my commitment to equity in mathematics education through technology and my research focus on supporting multilingual learners. Having previously worked on the Filling the Learning Gap and Expanding Web-Based Educational Opportunities Project, I saw firsthand how leveraging students’ full linguistic repertoires can expand access and deepen engagement. By analyzing characteristics of online math standardized assessments and embedding linguistically responsive supports into interactive online math games, we design questions that reflect how multilingual students make sense of mathematical ideas—through language, visuals, and context. This project not only aims to strengthen students’ performance, confidence, and metacognitive awareness, but also empowers them to see themselves as capable math learners through inclusive, research-informed design. This work also allows me to bridge research and practice to create inclusive, accessible learning experiences for all students.
