Job/Project Title

Understanding children’s non-verbal responses when engaging in deception: A scoping review

Job Description

The R&D GA will co-lead the project with the graduate students and oversee the research team in conducting a scoping review of the literature on children's non-verbal behaviours when they engage in deceptive behaviours (including both cheating and lying).

Duties

Duties will include the following:

  • Searching relevant databases and sources for articles and reports on the topic
  • Screening and selecting studies based on predefined criteria
  • Extracting and synthesizing data from the included studies
  • Writing and revising sections of the scoping review report
  • Preparing tables, figures, and appendices for the report
  • Provide guidance and training to undergraduate RAs (20% of time)

Job Location

Some work will be conducted at OISE in the lab, and some work will be conducted online

May 1, 2024—August 31, 2024

Required Skills

The candidate must have:

  • A solid grasp of the concepts and principles of academic cheating, academic integrity, and child development, and their implications for educational practice and policy.
  • a good knowledge of the existing literature on children's non-verbal behaviours, such as eye gaze, facial expressions, gestures, and posture, and the methods used to measure and analyze them in research settings.
  • at least 1-2 experience in leading or co-leading research projects in research fields.
  • a high level of proficiency in research design, data collection, statistical analysis (using SPSS and R), and interpretation of results, as well as strong writing and presentation skills.
  • a well-organized, diligent, and conscientious work ethic, with a keen attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.

Eligibility

  • To hold an R&D GA, you must be registered as a full-time student at OISE in an eligible program.
  • Masters students (including MA, MEd, MT, and MA-CSE) students are eligible to hold a R&D GA in the first 2 years of their program.
  • MA-SCCP students are eligible to hold an R&D GA in the first 3 years of their program.
  • Full-time doctoral students (PhD, EdD) are eligible to hold an R&D GA in the first 6 years of their program.
  • Flex-time PhD students are eligible to be considered for a GA or R&D GA once during the first 5 years of their program and must be pursuing full-time studies as per the CUPE 3902, Unit 7 Collective Agreement.
  • You are not eligible for an R&D GA if you are holding a combination of scholarships, fellowships, OISE-arranged teaching assistantships, OISE-arranged course instructorships and/or research assistantships greater than or equal to the value of a full R&D GA during the academic year (September-August)
  • You may not hold a Graduate Assistantship (GA) and an R&D Graduate Assistantship (R&D GA) at the same time
  • For Fall/Winter, Fall, and Winter contracts, students who are full-time employees at the University of Toronto or elsewhere, are ineligible to be considered for R&D Graduate Assistantships under the CUPE 3902, Unit 7 Collective Agreement. Full-time employment is defined as 35 hours per week, or where different, the number of hours specified in an employee's contract as full-time employment.
  • Appointments are conditional upon a student being legally authorized to work in Canada by virtue of having a Social Insurance Number and Canadian issued study permit by the commencement date of the appointment or, at the latest, within one month following the commencement date of the appointment.  Students will need a Canadian bank account in order to receive remuneration.

Full-time students may not concurrently hold a Graduate Assistantship and a Research and Development Graduate Assistantship. 

Research Development Graduate Assistantships (RDGA) are remuneration for graduate students who are engaged in research and/or field development-oriented projects contributing to their academic and professional development. The wage rate for a 2024 Summer RDGA is $6,691.43.
