The Sixth Symposium of the Southern Ontario Universities, themed “From Silos to Solidarity: Rethinking Languages and Literacies in Education through collaboration and care,” brought together 249 participants in a dynamic hybrid gathering at Niagara College on October 24 and 25, 2025. The symposium featured 60 presentations, posters, and roundtables, the symposium welcomed student researchers, early career researchers and renowned scholars from over 26 countries, highlighting its truly global reach. By offering free registration and a hybrid format, the event helped break geographical and institutional silos, increasing access and participation from across regions and disciplines.
Major themes included plurilingualism, multiliteracies, AI in language education, online and distance learning, immigration and mobility, language policy and inclusion, teacher and student agency, critical and decolonial literacies, multimodality, digital learning, and higher education language practices.
The event strengthened cross-institutional collaboration and international dialogue in the field of languages and literacies education. We also extend our sincere thanks to the Centre for Research in Education at Niagara College and our partners and volunteers at University of Toronto Mississauga, Western University, York University, University of Waterloo for their generous support in making this event successful.
