Colloquium: Alan Sears on Eros and Alienation: Capitalism and the Making of Gendered Sexualities

April 1, 2026

On April 17th, join us for a colloquium featuring Dr. Alan Sears, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Toronto Metropolitan University, on his recent book Eros and Alienation: Capitalism and the Making of Gendered Sexualities (Pluto Press, January 2025). The presentation will be followed by a Q & A.

Dr. Sears explores how our drive to shape the world and fulfill ourselves through labour is constrained by capitalist alienation, leaving erotic life as a central site for transformation and self-fulfillment. His work examines how alienated labour structures the formation of gendered sexualities, reinforcing dominant norms of heterosexuality, homosexuality, and bisexuality, while highlighting ongoing forms of resistance. Drawing on decades of scholarly and activist work in queer Marxism, Sears illuminates the intersections of labour, sexuality, and social justice.
