Isabel Boucher

Master of Arts (MA) in Child Study and Education
Expected year of graduation: 2026
What led you to apply to APHD at OISE?
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology and knew early on that I wanted to pursue further studies. During my second year, I took courses in child and adolescent development and educational psychology which solidified my interest in entering the education sector. After a conversation with one of my former professors, he encouraged me to look into OISE’s programs. As an out-of-province student, I was unfamiliar with OISE and discovered the MA-CSE program during my research. The moment I read about it, I knew it was exactly where I wanted to be.
What was your past experience like?
I never took time off prior to starting or after finishing my undergraduate degree meaning my work experience is primarily summer employment opportunities. I worked as a summer camp counsellor for children and adults with disabilities with Easter Seals BC for two summers which allowed me to gain valuable insights into creating inclusive, supportive atmospheres. Another summer I worked at a daycare, where I primarily worked with children aged 5-7. I was also a teacher’s assistant for university-level psychology courses, and a cheerleading coach for children aged 4-8.
What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at OISE?
I love the diversity within the OISE community. The community is enriched by a variety of identities as well as previous fields of study and work experiences. This diversity fosters a dynamic and inclusive environment where everyone can learn from each other and grow both personally and professionally. The unique perspectives and experiences offered by each individual contributes to a vibrant and supportive learning environment.
What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
I’m new to Toronto so exploring the endless things to do here has been fun! I don’t know if I’ve determined a favourite thing about living here (yet), but I love going to the Kensington Market solo or with friends for some incredible food and vintage shopping. I also love how many concerts there are here! I’ve never lived in a city where artists come to, so that has been a highlight.
What does your “weekend” typically look like?
Trying to balance schoolwork/lesson planning, leisure, and recharging my social battery for the upcoming week. I’m an introvert, so I prioritize catching up on rest, incorporating some physical activity into my weekends and exploring new cafés or study spots! I often make time to call my loved ones as most of my family and friends live in the Maritimes and I don’t get to see them often.
What are some of your hobbies & interests?
I love travelling! I’ve lived on the East Coast and West Coast which allowed me to really appreciate nature and the outdoors. Other countries I’ve been to are Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Panama, and the United States. I also enjoy cooking, thrifting, reading, and going to the gym.
What is your favourite type of cuisine?
I love Mexican and Italian food.
Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
I’m certain I’ll end up teaching primary grades however if I’m going to teach locally or internationally is TBD! I’m very interested in teaching abroad in Australia after graduating but we’ll see what the future holds.
