What led you to apply to APHD at OISE?
My work in the helping field originally started with my education in Music Therapy and Psychology. After working in hospital and long-term care settings as a music therapy intern for a while, I entered the non-profit field as a counsellor and program facilitator. I thought this work was really rewarding, but I often wished I had more training to navigate the difficult conversations I found myself having with clients. I decided becoming a psychotherapist was the next step in my career and I wanted to be trained by the best educators and practitioners in the city I love, so I applied to OISE!
What was your past experience like?
Through various roles, I have worked with clients across the lifespan with a wide range of presenting concerns. I have worked as a Direct Support Person for children with ASD, as a guitar and ukulele teacher in elementary schools, and as a counsellor and program facilitator for individuals aged 18-30 experiencing mental health difficulties and barriers to employment and education. In my music therapy work, I have primarily seen middle aged to senior clients experiencing depression, anxiety, dementia, bipolar disorder, palliative care and life transitions. I also have a few years of research experience, as a research assistant and a primary investigator studying narcissism in social dilemmas.
Are there any past accomplishments that you would like to highlight?
Looking back, I am pretty proud of myself for completing a double degree in Music Therapy (BMT) and Psychology (BA: Research Specialist) while working during my undergrad. I learned a lot about time management and the types of populations I want to work with.
What is one thing you like most about your experience so far at OISE?
My peers and new friends make me extremely hopeful about the future of mental health care. Everyone is so kind and collaborative, and building a network of other future therapists has been lovely.
What is your favourite thing about Toronto?
As someone who grew up here, this city will always have my heart. I love the summer street festivals, and the music and stand-up comedy scenes. There is always something to do!
What does your “weekend” typically look like?
I love going to farmers markets, trying new cafes and restaurants, and going to parks with friends. A good board game night is also a must.
What are some of your hobbies & interests?
I like to redecorate my apartment every chance I get. I love playing music, reading fiction, collecting vinyls, playing board games, and spending time with my two cats and dog. In the summer, you can find me gardening in my backyard.
What is your favourite type of cuisine?
Right now, I would say Japanese food.
Where do you see yourself after you achieve your degree from APHD?
I see myself working as a psychotherapist, and eventually opening up my own private practice and perhaps supervising other students one day.
