AI and Data Science Emphasis (Developmental Psychology and Education)
The emphasis on AI and Data Science introduces students to artificial intelligence's and data science’s transformative potential within educational and developmental contexts. Students will explore how AI and data-driven methods can be responsibly and effectively integrated into psychological research, educational practice, and human development.
Through interdisciplinary coursework, students will examine the ethical, social, and developmental implications of data science and AI applications, engage with cutting-edge tools like machine learning and multilevel modeling, and learn how to analyze complex educational datasets to inform practice and policy. Emphasis is placed on aligning AI technologies and data science methods with developmental principles to support equitable learning.
Students will gain foundational and advanced skills in areas such as AI implementation, educational data science, and psychometric analysis. The emphasis will prepare them to lead innovation in AI-enhanced learning environments.
Coursework
Developmental Psychology and Education (DPE) MEd students must complete 1.5 full-course equivalents (FCEs) toward the emphasis, which count toward the degree program total.
Upon successful completion of the emphasis requirements and successful completion of the degree requirements, students may make a request to the Developmental Psychology and Education Master of Education Program Liaison to have the emphasis noted on the student transcript. This request must be made before application for graduation.
Please note: The AI and Data Science emphasis is completed on an optional as part of fulfilling the requirements for the DPE MEd. The requirements for the PE Emphasis do not affect the overall requirements for the DPE MEd program and are not in addition to the usual program requirements.
Students must take at least one of the following courses from the Core AI and Data Science course menu:
APD1311H | Exploring AI and Its Implementation in Education |
APD1310H | AI in Psychology and Education |
APD3209H | Applied Machine Learning (MA level students can access the course with permission of the instructor) |
The remaining courses should come from the following list:
APD1292H | Instrument Design and Analysis (RM) |
APD3201 | Qualitative Research Methods in Human Development and Applied Psychology (RM) |
APD6001H | Multivariate Statistical and Psychometric Applications in Education and Psychology (MA level students can access course with permission of the instructor) (RM) |
JOI1288H | Intermediate Statistics and Research Design (RM) |
JOI3228H | Mixed Methods Research Design in Social Sciences (RM) |
JOI3229H | Meta-Analysis for Research in Psychology and Education (RM) |
JOI3043H | Development and Use of Surveys in Education Research (RM) |
JOI3048H | Intermediate Statistics in Educational Research: Multiple Regression Analysis (RM) |
JOI3049H | Multilevel and Longitudinal Modelling in Educational Research (RM) |
Upon completing both the emphasis and the overall degree requirements, students may request that the emphasis be noted on their transcript. This request must be made prior to applying for graduation.
Please note: This emphasis is optional and does not increase the total number of FCEs required for the DPE MEd program.
